Felix’s Rock Choir
£8 per session
Monday Night is ‘choir night’ at the Ladywell Gallery, with Felix’s Rock Choir, where the mantra is:
“Singing is good for the soul!”
Felix’s Rock Choir is an active, gigging local community choir with a difference:
- have say in repertoire
- make contributions to arrangements
- get to do a lot of gigs (typically 15-20) every year
- have loads of fun!
- have to audition (prospective members audition the choir!)
- have to sightread music notation
- have to sing to Karaoke tracks
- have to put up with diva-type lead singers
Felix’s Rock Choir rehearses at the Ladywell Gallery at Ladywell Tavern, 80 Ladywell Road, London, SE13 7HS Monday nights, 7:30-9:30pm (with a 30min pub break!) during school term time.
We book in 5, 6 or 7 week half terms (subs are £40, £48 or £56 respectively). Prospective members get one free taster session. The first series is charged pro rata from the week after the taster session.
A typical Monday night starts with simple warm-up exercises, a sing through of a few songs that most members know, a stab at new material and a big finish by 9:30pm with something from the catalogue. When there’s an imminent gig, the choir rehearses the set, and then fine tune any sections that need a little extra focus or revision. There’s a 30min break at 8:15pm, and most of the choir pile into the pub downstairs for a pint and a good old chat.
Felix’s Rock Choir has a PDF songbook (lyrics) of 150+ songs including 60 that have been performed ‘live’ at some point over the last 8-9 years. The choir perform a lot of classic Rock, Pop, Doo Wop and Soul music, featuring songs by The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Paloma Faith, Earth Wind & Fire, Bill Withers, Johnny Cash, The Kinks, Ray Charles, Gladys Knight, Elbow, Marvin Gaye, The Mamas & Papas, Cee Lo Green and the O’Jays to name but a few.
Our 200+ page PDF songbook has links to YouTube videos of all our material. We’ve started a SoundCloud page, too. We also have a ‘secular’ Christmas book with over 20 festive Rock & Pop songs.
Felix’s Rock Choir is lead by American music director/guitarist Baz Golin. Baz is also ‘Dean of Rock’ at Felix’s School of Rock. He teaches guitar and bass privately, and full rock bands in schools. He performs occasionally with local bands on guitar/bass/vocals, and is a semi-regular fixture at a couple of SE London Jam Sessions, too.
The Choir have been going since 2007, have an active repertoire of over 60 songs, recorded a 12 song CD in 2015, and a 4 song EP in 2008. They’ve performed in over 40 YouTube videos. The choir have gigged at local festivals like: Lewisham People’s Day, Manor House Gardens Festival, The Brockley Max Festival, The Crofton Park Carnival, and a couple of London’s Southbank Choral Festivals. They have also appeared in pubs and clubs in the area including: The Hob, The Ravensbourne Arms, Mycenae House, The IvyHouse, Jam Circus, The Old Tiger’s Head, The Ravensbourne Arms and The Ladywell Tavern. The choir have appeared at weddings, the Olympic Torch Relay (2012), and at a masked ball!
There’s no audition – if you’re brave enough to sing – you’re welcome! Prospective members can audition the choir any term time Monday night at a free taster session. Series prices are above. Felix’s Rock Choir accepts cash, cheques or BACS transfers. (We’re working on card payments, too!) BACS details are online on the FAQ page.
